Frequently Asked Questions

I want to start a home business, what kind of business should I choose?

The only person who can answer this question for you, is you. I certainly can not
tell you what business would be right for you. What I do tell women though, is to
think about your skills and talents, think about the things you like to do. There may
be a business idea there.  Think of hobbies you like to do, can you turn that into a
business?

You'll also want to check out the WAHM.com business directory. See what other
moms are doing. If you’re nervous about starting out all by yourself, talk to other
work at home moms in your neighborhood. You may be able to team up with one
of them.

I can't seem to find enough hours in the day, how do you do it?

The thing I find most often that goes wrong when someone starts a home business,
is they get caught up in all their new found freedoms.  Meaning, you can check your
email anytime you want, and too many women this way too many times a day.  They
also get caught up in reading lots of blogs and other people's websites.  There is a
time and place for this but, you can loose focus on the fact that you are trying to build
a business, not become the social queen.

Do not chat via instant messenger while you are working.  Save that for later at night
on your own time, after the kids are in bed.  Do not try to do everything yourself.  If
you absolutely hate doing something like bookkeeping, and you waste tons of time on it because it is such a chore for you, then hire someone to do your bookkeeping.  In the
end the cost of a bookkeeper will far out weigh the time lost procrastinating over a job
you hate to do.

Where do I get the money to start my business, especially in these economic times?

You have a great idea for a business, you have researched it, studied it, longed to
make it your own. But, like many things in life, starting a business requires money and
you just don't have any to spare right now. While start-up costs vary, many successful entrepreneurs have started with just a few hundred dollars. Your start-up costs will
depend much on the business you are starting and what materials or supplies you will
need.

When starting a home business, it is important to remember to calculate your living
expenses as well as business expenses. A new business can often take several years
before seeing a profit, you need enough money to survive until the business can support
itself.

Here are just a few ideas of how you might go about getting that money to start your
dreams coming true.

Part-time job: You might want to consider working part-time for someone else and
working part time on your business.  It could just be the best of both worlds, you have a regular income coming in and you still get to work on building that dream of owning your
own business.

Start slowly: work your business after your regular job. This lets you ease into all the
tasks required to run a business with out the financial pressure. It does take away from
your free time but, the sacrifice may be worth it in the long run when in 6 months to a yearyou have more time to spend on your business than before.

Live on one salary: If you are married or have a significant other and can afford it, live on one salary for a period of time. Because of the strain it can cause financially and emotionally, you want to have set goal in terms of a time frame to make a business profit, and stick to it. Remember your partner is covering for you, if you set a time frame and then keep pushing it further out, your partner may become resentful that they have to always make the sacrificies.

Use savings or retirement account: If you don’t have one, create one by putting away
part of your job earnings in an account. If you have one, consider using it to start your
venture. If you are successful, it will have been a great investment!

Borrow from family or friends: This can be tough because not all family and friends
are as encouraging or supportive as you will need them to be to get your business going.
You may hear from them how no one makes a living on the internet or that you are just chasing rainbows. Thank them for their input and move on, On the other hand, they may
just be eager to help you reach your dreams.

Credit cards: While the message of every financial planner I have ever talked too is to
cut up credit cards.  I have found I don't listen very well. I have used my credit cards on occasion to fund my business.  But, be very, very careful when choosing this option,
interest rates are very high, use them wisely and keep strict records of everything you
spend to start your business.

Investors: If you have a great business idea other business people may be willing to
invest in your business in exchange for partial ownership (usually stock). Seek pro-
fessional assistance before recruiting venture capitalists you could lose everything you
have dreamed about in a bad deal.
